Be Still

“Time flies when you’re having fun”. Does that quote sound familiar to you? I feel like Grace and I have said some version of that quote out loud lately more than ever before. I guess having a nine- month-old son will do that to you. Luke has learned to pull himself up, feed himself a bottle, and crawl with sprinter-like speed all at the same time, it seems. We are new parents just trying to soak in every moment with our little guy. I recall one night last week when I was getting Luke ready to go to bed. We went through our regular routine and he went to sleep (thankfully) pretty quickly. As I stood over his crib looking down on him, I continued to sing him to sleep, as I often do. At that moment, I was brought to tears. One of the things that brings me the most joy as a parent are those times when I can truly gaze on and reflect on the gift that God has given to us. As Christians, I believe we need to have similar moments in our relationship with Jesus. It’s not always easy, however. Life gets busy. Circumstances get hectic. We get overwhelmed by our responsibilities. We have burdens to carry. If you are in a busy season of life, I want to encourage you with the familiar words of the Psalmist: “Be still and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10).” Take some time to pause if you haven’t done so in a while. Reflect on all that God has done for you in Christ. Gaze upon the beauty of the Lord. The chorus of an old hymn comes to mind that I want to encourage you to reflect on today:

Turn your eyes upon Jesus

Look full in His wonderful face

And the things of earth will grow strangely dim

In the light of His glory and grace
