Learning to Make Time

Let me let you in on a little secret … We aren’t getting any younger! Even though I still feel young and do things that I probably shouldn’t be doing at my age – I do have a clear understanding that a birthday = getting older.

During this time of COVID-19, we have found ourselves “sheltering in place” more than we would like. To me, the worst part of the past months has been not being able to spend much time with family and friends. I think we have all found that we take a lot for granted – when so much is taken away from us.

I was recently at a board meeting for a foundation that I serve on. As I was driving home from the meeting, I started getting a little teary-eyed as I thought about 3 friends that serve on the board that have lost a child to substance abuse and depression. I started thinking about my life, my wife and kids. I came to a stop sign and found myself praying fervently. Praying for my 3 friends and their families – also praying for my own family. Questions started popping in my head – Am I doing enough for my family and with my life –  am I a good husband, dad, friend to my friends, etc.

Like all of us from time to time, especially as we get older, we start to take inventory of our life. We sort out the positive and negative aspects of it. We contemplate changes. We start to try to live our lives in hopes to one day hear the words – well done my good and faithful servant.

A few years ago, I promised to spend more time with loved ones and friends. Even trying to connect with friends from my “early years”. I knew that in order to do this I had to learn how to make time… create time. There is an old saying – we make time for the things that are important to us.

Are you making time to spend with your kids, going on dates with your spouse, calling a friend to meet you for coffee? It’s very important that we learn to make time. I have made great strides in making time for those that are important to me. Sometimes it’s a balancing act – I find that it is about making sacrifices. Then, there is learning to make time for yourself. Quality time with yourself is very important as well.
