Literacy Night

Last month we held a Literacy night for the first time! We invited all our TBWP family to join us on a Thursday night and we had fun activities planned in each classroom to encourage parents to think about reading, letter recognition, and letter sounds. We had two letter activities planned for each classroom, each one fitting our Dr. Seuss theme. We had give aways and fun snacks (Truffula Tree Seeds – aka Berry Kix cereal). As they were leaving, they had the opportunity to have their photo made in our Dr. Seuss Photo Booth, and they got to select a free book from a wonderful selection of age appropriate books. Planning this first-time event, I didn’t know what to expect. I have never even attended a Literacy Night before! I relied heavily on Pinterest to help me come up with great ideas for fun activities and decorations. We really wanted to highlight Literacy, and how important it is for our Preschoolers. This was specifically designed to be a parent driven activity, and not teacher led. I wanted to show our parents how easy it is to teach children phonics and enable them with the skills to do this at home with their children.

The facts regarding reading to our children are staggering.

 The greatest amount of brain growth occurs between birth and age five. In fact, by age 3, roughly 85% of the brain’s core structure is formed.

 The developing brain triples in the first year alone and is virtually fully formed by the time a child enters kindergarten.

 By the age of 2, children who are read to regularly display greater language comprehension, larger vocabularies, and higher cognitive skills than their peers.

And they go on. There is significant correlation between reading to your child and smarter children. Here at Trinity Baptist Weekday Preschool, reading is paramount. We want to make sure our parents understand the incredible importance of reading! Building connections with our TBWP family is crucial with our program’s success. We strive to have real, honest relationships with our parents, showing them the love of Jesus through our actions. We share the truth about the Gospel and the Good News of Jesus each day with our students. Please continue to pray for us as we reach out to our community, one child at a time!
