This Is Why We Fight

One of my favorite television series is Band of Brothers.  If you haven’t had the opportunity to see this series it follows Easy Company through their struggles and conquests in WWII.  The next to last episode is titled Why we Fight, and tells of the discovery of concentration camps in Germany.  At this point in the war the men had lost many friends and were worn down after years of training and fighting.  The discovery of the camps and the liberation of those imprisoned in the camps gave the men of Easy Company the reminder they needed to press on through the VE Day and after.  

This is going to seems like a stretch to compare but I was reminded of this episode and its theme this past week during VBS.  While for the kids and most volunteers VBS week is an incredibly fun time, but lost in the fun, games and countless grams of sugar is the months of preparation that go into it.  For most of the staff by the middle of the week we are either running on fumes or waving the white flag.  But the moment any despair sets in all you have to do is hear one of our sweet children quoting scripture, singing a praise song to Jesus, or responding to the Gospel … you catch that second wind and remember, this is Why We Fight.

A verse that has come to mind a lot recently is Galatians 6:9, “Let us not become weary in doing good.”  Whatever it is that has you exhausted, weary or losing heart be encouraged that God is at work in your life and through your life even when you and I don’t see it.  Let the words of Paul be an encouragement to you in your daily grind.
